SHELTER IN THE ORANGES PROTECTS LGBTQ TEENS DURING CORONA VIRUS

Garden State Equality, an advocacy and education organization, makes major supermarket run for the Essex County LGBTQ Rain (Reaching Adolescents in Need) Foundation in East Orange, which provides emergency shelter, transitional housing and permanent supportive housing to address the needs of LGBTQ young people, ages 18-26. Actress Naturi Naughton originally from East Orange sponsored hundreds of free meals in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak

Naughton, known for her role as Tasha St. Patrick on the STARZ series, “Power,” worked alongside Southern Comfort Cafe in Orange and King’s Family Restaurant in Newark to provide 100 meals per day for two weeks in early April.

Mayor Ted Green, along with our EOPD and EOFD, brought lunch to our health professionals of East Orange General Hospital who are on the frontlines everyday helping to stop the spread of coronavirus in our community. Thank you to Burnet BBQ, Gencarelli's, Blueprint Cafe and S.L.Z. Waste, owned by former EOPD detective Joseph Juliano, for donating food to fuel our healthcare workers as they work around the clock to beat this virus!

Connie Bentley McGhee, who recently lost her husband Samuel T. McGhee, former Mayor of Hillside, to COVID-19 related complications, donated 1,000 latex gloves to the East Orange Police Department on behalf of Das Pharmacy of Passaic, NJ. 

Checkers - Serving our First Responders and More

Bruce Keehn, CEO of Best Burger Management and owner of Checkers-East Orange located at 360 Central Ave, has worked with local housing, schools, and civic groups to accommodate their needs. They are also continuing to offer a free meal to police officers and firefighters. 

Circles For Healing in Partnership with Elmwood United Presbyterian Church - Creating Village Grocery Bags for Hope

Circles of Healing donors and volunteers together with Reverend Maria Crompton from Elmwood United Presbyterian Church created a Flash Food Bank. The partners are distributing "Village Grocery Bags” which are supplied with non-perishable items, no questions asked and giving them out at 135 Elmwood Avenue.  The group was featured on News 12 NJ.

Blackstone 360 - Donating Masks to our local Hospital

S. Airaj Hasan, CEO of Blackstone 360, donated 3,300 masks to East Orange General Hospital. This donation represents three day’s worth of inventory for the hospital to keep East Orange residents safe in a world where these products are not available internationally. Mayor Ted Green was able to facilitate this important connection.

Urban Taste - Providing Hot Meals to our Seniors

Genavee Winfrey, Owner of Urban Taste Restaurant, on Central Avenue provides hot dinners to the seniors of Peter Antonelli Towers who are in isolation due to COVID-19.
